Tour Itinerary
Pergamon Ancient City
Explore the rich history of Pergamon (also known as Pergamum or Pergamos), once a wealthy and powerful ancient Greek city in the region of Mysia. Located approximately 26 kilometers inland from the modern Aegean coastline, near today’s town of Bergama, Turkey, Pergamon flourished during the Hellenistic period as the capital of the Kingdom of Pergamon under the Attalid dynasty (281–133 BC). The city became one of the most important cultural centers of the ancient Greek world.
Visitors today can admire the remains of its monumental architecture, including the famous Pergamon Altar. Pergamon was also the northernmost of the Seven Churches of Asia mentioned in the Book of Revelation. The ancient city was built on a 335-meter-high mesa of andesite rock, forming its Acropolis, which offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The ancient Selinus and Ketios rivers once framed the city.
During your visit, you will explore key landmarks such as the Acropolis, Trajaneum, Altar of Zeus, Pergamon Theater, Temple of Dionysus, Red Basilica, Roman Baths, Holy Fountain, and an Early Christian Church.
Asclepion
Later in the tour, we visit the renowned Asclepion, one of the most important ancient healing centers of the classical world. Dedicated to Asclepius, the god of medicine, the Asclepion was a famous sanctuary where innovative healing techniques were practiced. Your guide will explain the history of the site and how ancient medical treatments were performed here, making it one of the first true medical complexes in antiquity.
At the end of the tour, transfer back to your hotel or Izmir Airport.
